Academic Support Teachers
To improve the mainstream teachers' understanding of students with disabilities and to strengthen the instructional methodology of teachers in mainstream classrooms, a Special Education Teacher-Consultant works cooperatively with the Child Study Team. This New Jersey State certified Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant and Teacher of the Handicapped works to:
  • Coordinate the efforts of the mainstream teachers in meeting the learning needs of students
  • Provide instructional support to the mainstream teacher
  • Advise staff of the specific needs of students with severe learning and physical disabilities, and make arrangements for supplemental materials
  • Assist the student with alternate testing and organizational skills

504 Plan
Some students require a "504 Plan." This refers to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act, which specified that no one with a disability can be excluded from participating in federally funded programs and activities, including elementary, secondary or postsecondary schooling. "Disability" in this context, refers to a "physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities." This can include physical impairments; illnesses or injuries; communicable diseases; chronic conditions like asthma, allergies and diabetes; and learning problems. A 504 plan spells out the modifications and accommodations that will be needed for these students to have an opportunity to perform at the same level as their peers, and might include such things as wheelchair ramps, blood sugar monitoring, an extra set of textbooks, a peanut-free lunch environment, home instruction, or a tape recorder or keyboard for taking notes.
